Full disclosure here: I never have been a fan of Ghostbusters, so I am not familiar with the original at all. As far as I am concerned, this remake, starring my favourite comediennes Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, is the bomb. It is a supernatural comedy which can hold its own, with original zingers and snide references to the old movie.
Like Bridesmaids (2011), it has a good combination of slapstick humour and verbal wit.
Cleverly written by Paul Feig and Katie Dippold, Ghostbusters (2016) features a quirky, all-female team of paranormal investigators who come up against a psychopath who turns into a ghost by killing himself and, at the same time, unleashes a torrent of spookies on the city. Initially ridiculed and sidelined, the four eventually prove their mettle (using YouTube, what else, it’s 2016!) with their new-fangled equipment and sheer guts.
You’ll get to see yesteryear Ghostbusters stars like Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver make the odd cameo, with Murray taking up the most screentime out of all the old-timers as, of all things, a ghost-dissing cynic.
But my favourite male character is Chris Hemsworth, who plays the part of a male bimbo secretary with hilarity and good sport. He leads a mass dance during the credits. Do stay until the end of the credits for a surprise trailer for the sequel!
