Okay, all you sweet tooths out there! Be ready to be bowled over by dainty, mouth-watering high tea sets.
Creamy cupcakes, blissful macarons, sumptuous mini sandwiches- you name the treat, these cafes have it! At very affordable prices too.
These high tea sets are also very special in another way. They are contenders in the ‘Host a Dilmah Real High Tea Challenge’ being held from 20 – 28 June.
Judges for this challenge are Dr Leslie Tay of ieatishootipost, Daniel Ang of DanielFoodDiary and Adeline, head of OpenRice Singapore. The tea sets will be judged on the following:brewing of tea, presentation of the tea menu and pairing of tea with food. The winning café earns an all-expense paid trip to Sri Lanka in November.
I had the opportunity to try one of these high tea sets at the elegant Do.Main Bakery and their set transported me to heaven through their fresh apple tart, feather-light cream puff with a butter, whipped cream and custard cream filling as well as a ‘Snickers’ inspired peanut caramel macaron (among other heavenly items).
Skillfully crafted by French pastry Chef Frederic Deshayes, the pastries and dessert served on his high-tea menu are newly launched and come with Dilmah tea at the price of $32 for 2 pax (only $16 per pax).
Have you tasted curry in your croissant before? (Me? never!) But I must say that it is one of the best things ever. The mini wholewheat croissant filled with mayonnaise curry chicken presents a contrast of textures and flavours being crispy, creamy, sweet and savoury all at the same time. The egg cocotte with confit tomato has a delicate texture and you scoop a breadstick into the cup and out comes delicious fluffy, semi-cooked egg white and yolk and juicy tomato bits.
Chef Frederic had a lot of fun coming up with this menu: ” There is no high tea in France. It is an English concept. So this was a great opportunity for me to create new items for the menu, pairing sweet and savoury as well as hot and cold items. Some of them are healthier options such as the apple tart which is low in sugar and it also something that cannot be found in Singapore. These items will be available here from 2 – 6pm everyday.”
There is no doubt that Do.Main Bakery’s friendly and knowledgeable Chef Frederic will be happy to see you at his cosy cafe located at 226, Tanjong Katong Road, S’pore 437015.
