Revisiting Muffet’s Room Cafe @ Icon Village

The restaurant signboard back in 2011, still the same now in 2014.

I first discovered Muffet’s Room Cafe back in 2011, during a food event I hosted for bloggers. I had a good impression of the place as a hidden gem in Tanjong Pagar.

The restaurant is pretty small, with just a couple of tables and only accessible from the exterior of Icon Village. Nonetheless, therein lies its intimate charm.

Since 2011, Muffet’s Room had changed two owners. Their signature beer-battered fish and chips remains on the menu and Little Miss Muffet still adorns the signboard.

The current owner used to work a foreign bank, before deciding to takeover the business so that he can have “something of his own”. The owner is the chef too and put in a lot of effort to hone his culinary skills, having no prior professional cooking experience before he took over the business. Currently, there are are just two chefs – the owner himself and another hired help.

I visited Muffet’s Room with Rachel and Asher the previous weekend. Asher loves spaghetti and pasta and was delighted when he saw the menu. There’s no kid’s menu at Muffet’s Room, so we ordered a spaghetti, an eggs benedict and a fish and chips to share among the three of us:

Signature beer-battered fish and chips
Chunky Salmon Linguine
Eggs Benedict

The fish and chips is still as good as I remember it, with an improvement on the plating. Prices are extremely reasonable still. They still serve takeaway orders. Seats are very limited, hence it can be an option for those living nearby.

If you are looking for a quiet, fuss-free place with reasonable priced comfort food over the weekend, consider Muffet’s Room. They are open first half of the day on Saturday and for the full day on Sunday. Free parking is available on Sunday at the nearby Tanjong Pagar Plaza, less than 5 minutes walk. if you are taking public transport, drop at Tanjong Pagar MRT station and walk for about 5 minutes to reach Icon Village. The CBD area is very much like a ghost town during the weekend and you can escape from the crazy weekend crowd in pretty much everywhere else central.
