Siam Society

Siam Society is a modern Thai restaurant located in the trendy F&B enclave at Jalan Riang. It is the newest tenant there, having just started operations last November.

Restaurant interior

The restaurant is founded by two brothers who love to eat Thai food but find that most of the Thai food found locally have been too toned down to suit local taste. In order to bring authentic-tasting Thai food to Singaporeans, the two brothers decided to start Siam Society and their instruction to the chefs is “cook like how you will cook for the Thais”.

The menu

The two brothers are not newbies in the F&B business. They also operate Soi Thai Kitchen in Tampines which has been in operation for over two years, with it’s own regular customer base.

I had lunch at Siam Society recently with Rachel and Asher. These are the dishes we sampled:

Beancurd Soup (S$9.90 for Small and S$15.90 for Large) – non-spicy, suitable for children. We ordered this for Asher and he loved it.
The ingredient in the soup. The minced pork has been fried with chye poh and is extra crispy and fragrant.
Clear Tom Yum Seafood Soup (S$10.90 for Small and S$16.90 for Large)
Authentic and very spicy, just like what you get in Thailand. The real stuff.
Green Curry Chicken (S$12.90)
The brinjal and chicken in the curry
Deep Fried Pork Knuckles (S$34.90) – Siam Society’s signature dish
The knuckles are marinated in a house special marinade for one full-day before being deep fried to perfection
The fats and gelatin do not stick to your teeth and are awesome in flavours
Stir Fried Kai Lan (S$8.90) – Crunchy with garlic and oyster sauce
Red Ruby (S$4.90)
Lemongrass and Thai Iced Tea (S$3.90 each)

We loved the modern atmosphere of the place. Slurping down tom yum soup on a rainy day in Jalan Riang was a wonderful way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The servings are quite large and prices are pretty reasonable. The signature pork knuckle is a must-try. For those who are unaccustomed to Thai level of spiciness, be sure to ask the kitchen to go easy on the chili when ordering. 🙂
