Fern & Kiwi @ Clarke Quay

From the name itself, one can easily tell that Fern & Kiwi is a New Zealand-themed restaurant. Located in vibrant Clarke Quay, Fern & Kiwi features a bar and live band on the ground floor and a chic, quiet, fine dining setting on the second floor.

New Zealand welcome

It has been in operation for over a year now, with a recent push to promote the restaurant part of the business:

The menu offers a selection of New Zealand food, wines and beers, seeking to bring the taste of New Zealand to Singapore diners.

When we think about New Zealand, green pastures, beautiful mountains and free roaming livestock comes to mind.

This is also the kind of gastronomy experience Fern & Kiwi seeks to bring out, focusing on fresh, pure and all-natural New Zealand local ingredients and produce.

The meats in the restaurant are imported from New Zealand and are all free-ranged. There is less fat and marbling, but it gives a leaner texture and is healthier to consume.

These are the dishes I sampled on my visit:

Marinated seafood salad (S$22) – Marinated squids, prawns, mussels tossed with romaine lettuce, baby spinach and orange segments in a yuzu dressing
Watercress & Avocado Salad (S$20) – Watercress tossed through avocado, grapefruit, orange and kiwi fruit in a lemon vinaigrette
New Zealand imported Antipodes mineral water (sparkling) – S$8 for 500ml or S$12 for 1l
Pan Seared Scallops (S$28) – served with grilled asparagus, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce with mushroom soil and shaved parmesan
New Zealand King Salmon Fillet (S$42) – served on a bed of green-lipped mussel and sumac risotto with dill crème fraiche and vine tomato confit
Southern Ocean Chowder (S$22) – packed with green- lipped mussels, sea-run salmon and scallops and cooked over light creamy fish broth with chunky potatoes and watercress
Char Grilled Portobello (S$32) – on roasted sweet potato risotto topped with feta cheese, arugula and pine nuts in a balsamic reduction

Five different sauces for the meat courses
Stockyard Angus Porterhouse Steak (S$135) – 800gm porterhouse, grilled the way you like, enough for 2 to 3 pax

Grilled Royal Pork Chop (S$48) – served with baby potatoes and broccollini atop caramelized apple in garlic jus
Sliced royal pork for sharing – I love this
Haricot beans and feta cheese with almond flakes (S$11.50)
Cauliflower gratin with Upper Moutere cheese (S$11.50)
Kumara mash – traditional New Zealand sweet potato mash (S$11.50)
Kiwi Eton Pavlova (S$14) – crushed pavlova and raspberry snow with passion fruit, kiwi, chantilly cream and doris plum ice cream
Lemon 7 Yuzu (S$15) – lemon yuzu bar, passion fruit caramel, crushed candy meringue, freeze-dried pineapple and raspberry, sprinkled with coconut soil
Warm coffee floating island (S$14) – Espresso float “espuma”, walnut caramel, chocolate crumble and coffee kahlua sponge crouton topped with vanilla ice cream
Hot Chocolate Pudding (S$14) – Soft fudge chocolate “molten” with cinnamon crumble, summer berries and vanilla ice cream

The pictures are mouth-watering isn’t it?

They taste just as good. I particularly love the meat dishes.

Price is on the steep side, but you pay for quality.

The restaurant pays attention to the smallest details in their menu. I was pleasantly surprise when the general manager shared with us that they import pure air cubes from New Zealand to serve with their premium bottles:

Imported New Zealand Pure Ice!

New Zealand beers and tap wines

Fern & Kiwi offers one of the most extension selection of New Zealand beers and wines with 33 to 7 wine labels including Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc and Ata Rangi Pinot Noir. They also house a range of exclusive labels such as Te Mata and Revolution Wines which are served only on tap.

  • I went there with my family last year and the experience was good:) but looks like it has changed many items including the desserts and this definitely tempts me for a revisit. The grilled lamb rack with the roasted garlic looks delicious and I thought it was a pineapple instead of garlic at first...haha
