Last Saturday (21 May), I was invited by the folks from Nestle’s Kit Kat ® to a painting session at My Art Space, an art studio located at 21 Tanjong Pagar Road. The event was held in conjunction with Kit Kat ®’s Yer Big Break! – a contest organised by Kit Kat ® for illustrators, designers and artists to give their own creative spin on what taking a break means to them.
I have not draw or paint anything for a long while, despite my strong interest during my younger days. One key reason is the switch from traditional art medium to digital artwork which is quicker and cleaner. This was going to be a point of frustration later on when I found out there’s no “Ctl + Alt + Z” to “undo” when I make a mistake in my painting.
As I picked up the brushes, paint and canvas, I decided to do a painting of a mother panda and her baby as my interpretation of “having a break”. I am going to be a father soon in August and that to me, is a big break through in my life as I enter the phase of parenthood. In addition, my wife told me that new born babies respond well to black and white images, hence a panda painting will be fun for my boy to look at when he is born.
I used just four colours – black, while, blue and yellow on my palette, keeping the colour combination simple.
I made the mistake ouf applying black first instead of starting from the lighter colours. However, I managed to rectify the error by painting heavier layers and doing some toning with broad brush strokes.
The painting process was therapeutic and relaxing. It reminded me why I love art so much in the first place. It has been a while since I felt this way. Maybe this will get me started working on more artworks during my free time. 🙂
Anyway, here are some of the pictures taken at the event , featuring a group of other bloggers:
