Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival (包山節)

Have you heard of the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival (包山節)? Is there really a festival dedicated to just buns?

Apparently, there is.

I got to know about this festival via this video below:

Curious, I did a search on the festival. Via Wikipedia:

Cheung Chau Bun Festival (包山節) or Cheung Chau Da Jiu Festival (長洲太平清醮) is a traditional Chinese festival on the island of Cheung Chau (長洲) in Hong Kong. Being held annually, and with therefore the most public exposure, it is by far the most famous of such Da Jiu festivals, with Jiu (醮) being a Taoist sacrificial ceremony. Such events are held by mostly rural communities in Hong Kong, either annually or at a set interval of years ranging all the way up to once every 60 years (i.e. the same year in the Chinese astrological calendar).

Interesting? Hong Kong is not just a destination for food and shopping. There’s also their rich cultural heritage and festivals to soak in.

The residents of this tiny dumb-bell-shaped island (referring to Cheung Chau island) celebrate this unique festival from 7-11 May 2011. Part of Hong Kong’s Cultural Celebrations, the festival gets its name from the huge towers of buns erected outside the Pak Tai Temple where the main celebrations are held. Highlights include the Bun Scrambling Competition, huge towers stacked with buns and an incredible Piu Sik (Floating Colours) parade.

How to get there : Take ferry from Central Pier 5
Ferry Opening Hours : Regular – 12:30am to 11:45pm*

*Ferry service will be extended after the Bun Scrambling Competition on 11 May midnight. For details, please call the hotline of First Ferry at 2131 8181 on the event date.
