Like typical Singaporeans, Rachel and I were drawn to The Taiyaki kiosk by the long queue. The Japanese food kiosk specialise in selling Japanese fish-shaped pancake, traditional filled with azuki (red bean).
We had this at a famous stall in Japan where the azuki has been left brewing for years. The taste was heavenly. We did not expect that much from this Singapore kiosk, but still expected it to be pretty decent, given the long queue.
Alas, we were very disappointed.
We ordered two pancakes – an azuki flavoured one and a Japanese curry hotdog flavoured. This will allow us to try both their traditional and fusion flavours.
First of all, just look at the pancake itself. They fish looked scarred don’t they? The pancake is too thin and parts of the filling can be seen on the surface.
When we bite into them, the crust were not crunchy on the outside nor soft on the inside. Rather, it was too thin to taste. The Japanese curry hotdog filling wasn’t too bad, but that’s about it. As for the azuki filling, it tasted like the usual red bean paste one can get at the local markets.
It’s not cheap too btw, at upwards of S$2.00 per piece.
Not nice lei… why so many people go queue? Maybe it’s the novelty for now.
