[Movie Review] American Pie: Reunion (2012)

American Pie: Reunion

Thanks to the folks from UIP, I caught the preview for American Pie: Reunion at the cinemas yesterday with my old friend Mark whom I know from primary school and had watched the first American Pie movie with when we were still teens.

It is the eighth installment in the American Pie film series and the fourth in the original series of American Pie (1999), American Pie 2 (2001) and American Wedding (2003).

Move Trailer of American Pie: Reunion (2012):

We had fun watching this lad movie with all the silly, crude anatomy and sex jokes. It’s a pity we can’t have the rest of the blokes in our old gang to watch it together with. This movie is the ideal reunion movie for an all-guys group.

It has been 13 years since the first American Pie movie. Like all the main cast in the movie, Mark and I have also progressed from girls-hungry teens with raging hormones to stable, working daddies with our own wives and kids. This make watching the movie all the more enjoyable as the lad movie story line of American Pie has grown up too.

Movie Trailer of the first American Pie (1999):

In this latest movie, the original American Pie cast from the class of 1999 return to East Great Falls for their high school reunion. They are now in their 30s, some married, some with successful careers while others remain the same as they were in high school.

While the crude jokes remain, like the first American Pie movie that spin off a whole film series, there is still a decent overarching story structure, carried along by the engaging cast from the first movie. It was the reason why the first movie was such a box-office hit (ignore most of the other crap produced in the middle) and why this latest American Pie movie is likely to do well too.

Mark and I laughed hard through the movie and it was the perfect movie to catch after a hard day at work.

Those born in the 80s will relive some memories of your teenage years like Mark and I did. There was a scene in the movie where a song by the Spice Girls was playing on the car radio and a teenage girl commented that “CLASSIC pop songs are the best”. Gosh… that’s when it really sunk in to me how I have aged. 🙂

American Pie: Reunion opens in Singapore cinemas today. Go catch it! Note that it is rated M18 for sexual scenes, nudity and coarse language – kids, stay clear!

  1. Alright, the first film cam out when I was in high school and I loved it for all the reasons a high school boy would love it. When the first two sequels came out, I likewise liked them for the typical reasons. Being 27 now, I don’t really watch those anymore because they aren’t my tastes anymore. What I am hoping to see from this movie is an evolved humor to the generation that first saw these movies. If this thing is made to the tastes of the current generation, I don’t think I’m going to like it.
